Can 18 year old sign contract in UAE? Yes, an 18-year-old can sign a contract in the UAE.
The new Civil Transactions Law (Federal Decree-Law 25/2025) came into force on 1 June 2026. It sets the age of majority at 18 Gregorian years.
A person of that age with a sound mind who has not been interdicted has full capacity (Article 84). Some other laws still set a different age for specific acts, so the answer depends on what is being signed.
Quick Answer
Yes. Under the UAE Civil Transactions Law, effective from 1 June 2026, a person who has reached 18 Gregorian years, is of sound mind and has not been interdicted generally has full civil capacity to sign contracts without parental consent.
However, some transactions have separate legal requirements, including marriage, employment permits and property transactions. Contracts signed before the new law took effect, or while the person was under 18, require a separate assessment of capacity and the rules applicable at the time.
Can 18 year old sign contract in UAE: Capacity and legal limits
The Law gives full capacity at 18. Everyone is able to contract unless the law removes or limits that capacity (Article 146). The age was 21 lunar years before the new Law.
- A person who reaches 18 Gregorian years, has a sound mind and has not been interdicted can exercise his civil rights fully (Article 84).
- Every person is competent to contract unless capacity is removed or limited by law (Article 146).
- The Law applies from its commencement and does not govern earlier acts unless it says so (Article 4(1)). Check this point if a contract was signed before 1 June 2026.

What happens to contracts signed under 18
| Age or status | Effect on a contract | Article |
|---|---|---|
| Under 7, or without discernment | The child has no capacity, and all his dealings are void | 85, 147 |
| 7 to 17 (a discerning minor) | A contract that is purely beneficial is valid. One that is purely harmful is void | 148(1) |
| 7 to 17, mixed benefit and harm | The contract can be annulled for the minor’s benefit. The guardian can ask within a year of learning of it, and the minor can ask within a year after reaching majority | 148(2) |
| 15 or more, with court permission | The court may let the minor manage all or part of his property, with or without limits | 149 |
| 18 or more | Full capacity, if of sound mind and not interdicted | 84 |
A contract signed at 17 that mixes benefit and harm can therefore be challenged until the signatory’s 19th birthday. A contract signed at 18 or later is the signatory’s own responsibility.
Was a Contract Signed Before the Person Turned 18?
A contract signed by a minor may be valid, void or open to annulment depending on its terms and the applicable law. Leaders Advocates can review the signing date, the nature of the agreement and the relevant capacity rules.
Limits that still apply at 18
- A person who is insane or has a mental defect is interdicted by law. A prodigal or heedless person can be interdicted by a court. His dealings are then treated like a discerning minor’s (Articles 154 and 155).
- Civil marriage needs both spouses to be at least 21 under the civil personal status law (Federal Decree-Law 41/2022, Article 5(1)).
- A work permit generally needs the worker to be at least 18, with a separate permit for juveniles and students (Cabinet Resolution 1/2022, Article 7(1)(a)).
- A trader must have the required capacity (Commercial Transactions Law, Article 11(1)).
- A property disposition in Dubai is not effective unless recorded in the Real Property Register (Dubai Law 7/2006, Article 9(a)). A power of attorney for a sale needs special authority.
What to check before an 18-year-old signs
- Confirm the signatory is 18 Gregorian years old or more on the signing date, using an official ID.
- Check whether the contract type has its own age or approval rule, such as a licence, a marriage or a permit.
- Read the payment terms, guarantees and penalty clauses. At 18 the signatory is bound without a parent’s consent.
- Keep a signed copy and proof of identity.
- If the contract is old, check whether it was signed before 1 June 2026.
