If You Are an International Business or Creator with intellectual property in Dubai
Dubai is a major market for international brands and creators. With millions of consumers and a growing digital economy, IP protection in Dubai matters more than ever. Here is what international clients need to know.

Protection of foreign intellectual property rights in the UAE depends on the type of IP right, applicable UAE legislation and relevant international treaties. Trademark protection generally requires protection extending to the UAE through national or applicable international registration mechanisms, while copyright protection is governed by UAE law and applicable international conventions.”

The UAE is a member of major international IP conventions including the Paris Convention and the Berne Convention. This means UAE IP protection connects to your international rights.

Counterfeiting and brand copying are common in some UAE markets. We work with customs and enforcement authorities to seize fake goods at the border and in local markets.

All IP matters can be handled in your language. Arabic, English, Russian, Urdu, or Turkish. You do not need to be in Dubai to instruct us, we handle everything remotely if needed.

IP Protection in Dubai and the UAE
The UAE has strong intellectual property laws that protect trademarks, copyrights, patents, trade secrets and industrial designs. These laws are enforced by the Ministry of Economy and the UAE courts. The DIFC Courts may hear civil and commercial disputes, including disputes involving intellectual property, where the applicable jurisdictional requirements are satisfied. The appropriate protection strategy depends on the type of intellectual property involved. Some rights require registration, while others may receive protection without registration under UAE law.
Intellectual property disputes in Dubai may involve UAE courts, government authorities and specialist administrative procedures. Our lawyers advise and represent clients throughout the applicable registration, enforcement and dispute-resolution process.

- FAQs
Answers to the Questions We Hear Most Often
IP law raises a lot of questions, especially for people who are protecting their work for the first time. Here are the ones we get asked most.
Someone copied my logo in Dubai. What can I do?
If your logo is registered as a trademark in the UAE, you can file a complaint with the Ministry of Economy or take the matter to the Dubai courts. The court can issue an emergency order to stop the other party using your logo immediately. If your logo is not yet registered, you may still have rights under copyright law. Contact us and we will tell you which route applies to your situation.
Do I need to register my trademark in Dubai if I already have it registered in another country?
Trademark protection is territorial. To secure trademark protection in the UAE, rights holders generally need a UAE registration or protection extending to the UAE through an applicable international registration system, such as the Madrid System. The UAE has its own trademark register managed by the Ministry of Economy. If you want legal protection for your brand name or logo in Dubai, you need to file a separate application here. You can use the Madrid Protocol if your country is a member, which makes filing in multiple countries easier.
Is my copyright automatically protected in the UAE or do I need to register it?
Eligible original works may receive copyright protection without registration under UAE law. Ownership and the scope of protection depend on the circumstances of creation and the applicable provisions of UAE copyright law. This applies to writing, art, photography, music, software, and design. However, registering your copyright with the Ministry of Economy adds a layer of legal proof that can make enforcing your rights in a UAE court much easier.
Someone is selling a product in Dubai that looks exactly like mine. What are my options?
Depending on the circumstances, copying a product or its branding may involve trademark infringement, copyright infringement, industrial design rights, unfair competition or other rights protected under UAE law. In the UAE, you can apply to the court for an emergency order to stop the sale, seize the infringing goods, and claim compensation. UAE customs can also intercept infringing goods at the border if they are being imported. Act fast, the sooner you involve a lawyer, the more options you have.
I am buying a business in Dubai. How do I check if the IP is clean?
Before buying any business, you need an IP due diligence check. This means verifying that all trademarks are properly registered in the UAE and not expired, checking that the business actually owns the IP it claims to own, identifying any IP disputes or infringement claims, and making sure any software, designs, or content used by the business are properly licensed. We carry out IP due diligence as part of business acquisition advice.
A former employee has taken my company's confidential information to a competitor. What can I do?
Unauthorized use or disclosure of confidential business information may constitute an infringement of protected undisclosed information or give rise to other legal claims under UAE law, depending on the circumstances. You can apply to the court for an emergency order to prevent the information from being used or disclosed further, and file a civil claim for compensation. Speed matters, the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to limit the damage. Contact us immediately if this has happened. We have handled trade secret cases in Dubai courts and know how to move fast.
