Here is how to attest marriage certificate for UAE visa applications. Authenticate it in the country where you married, get the UAE embassy stamp there, complete MOFA attestation in the UAE, then add a certified Arabic translation.
The attested certificate is one part of the spouse visa file. The sponsor must also meet the salary and housing rules.
This guide is for visa applicants. For the general attestation chain and certificates issued in the UAE, see how to attest a marriage certificate in the UAE.

How to Attest Marriage Certificate for UAE Visa: 6 Steps
- Check the certificate: use the official civil certificate. Make sure names, dates and passport details match both passports.
- Authenticate at home: follow the issuing country’s route, usually the registry or a notary and then the foreign ministry.
- Get the UAE embassy stamp: submit the certificate to the UAE embassy or consulate responsible for that country.
- Apply for MOFA attestation: log in with UAE Pass, choose a document issued outside the UAE, and hand the original to the courier.
- Translate into Arabic: use a licensed legal translator, and make sure every stamp is translated.
- Apply for the visa: upload the attested certificate and translation with the rest of the file.
MOFA only accepts a foreign document that already has the home-country and UAE embassy approvals. The original must not be laminated.
Spouse Visa Requirements
According to the UAE Government portal, a resident sponsoring a spouse needs:
- Salary: at least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.
- Marriage proof: a marriage certificate attested and in Arabic, or translated into Arabic by a certified translator.
- Housing: a registered tenancy contract.
- Employment proof: an employment contract and a salary certificate.
- Spouse documents: passport copies, photos and a medical fitness certificate for applicants aged 18 and above.
Dubai residents usually apply through GDRFA Dubai. Residents of the other emirates usually apply through ICP.

Common Reasons for Rejection
- Name mismatch: a spelling or missing middle name differs from the passport.
- Missing stamp: the UAE embassy step was skipped.
- Apostille only: the UAE is not a party to the Apostille Convention, so an apostille alone is not enough.
- Wrong document: a religious or ceremonial certificate instead of the official civil record.
- Translation gaps: stamps or seals left untranslated.
- Damaged original: a laminated or torn certificate.
When You Need a Lawyer
Most couples can attest the certificate themselves or through an agent. A lawyer helps when the problem is legal, not just a missing stamp.
Examples include a marriage that was never registered, a certificate with wrong details that the issuing country will not correct, or a second marriage. Our guide on whether a prenuptial agreement can be signed after marriage also helps couples planning their legal affairs in the UAE.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is an Apostille Enough for a UAE Spouse Visa?
No. You still need UAE embassy attestation in the issuing country and MOFA attestation in the UAE.
Does the Marriage Certificate Need an Arabic Translation for the Visa?
Yes, unless it is already in Arabic. The UAE Government portal asks for an attested certificate in Arabic or translated by a certified translator.
How Long Does the Whole Process Take?
Often a few weeks. The home-country and embassy steps take the longest, while MOFA takes up to three working days.
What Salary Do I Need to Sponsor My Spouse?
At least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.
Can an Agent Do the Attestation for Me?
Yes. Agents and typing centres can handle each stage, but keep copies and check every stamp when the original comes back.
